Orlando, Fla. – For the first time in school history, the Eastern Washington University Athletics Department has received an award from the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators, the organization announced on Tuesday, June 16.
A member of Group II that includes fellow FCS athletics departments and other NCAA Division I athletics departments without football, EWU received Silver in the Student Promotion category and Bronze in the Interactive/Social Media Program category.
The winners were recognized during NACMA’s 24th Annual Convention at a special awards ceremony. Nearly 1,000 entries were received for the 2014-15 athletic season.
Eastern’s submission for the Student Promotion category centered around Men’s Basketball’s 2014-15 season opener, which tipped at 8 a.m. and was the nation’s first college basketball game of the past year. Focusing on morning-themed promotions, EWU gave away logoed slippers and maple bacon donuts to students to increase attendance. The giveaways resulted in a near-capacity student section despite the early tip-off time.
EWU’s entry for the Interactive/Social Media Program was its summer social media campaign leading up to Football’s nationally televised season opener on Aug. 23, 2014. Dubbed the “#BeIncredible Social Media Summer: 30K Challenge,” the campaign consisted of unique content spread across Eastern’s social media channels. The goal was to increase Eastern’s social media followers to 30,000 across all channels prior to kickoff. Each day of the week had a custom theme, and prizes were given away to fans that interacted with the unique content items that were posted daily. The campaign resulted in over 38,000 followers, surpassing the goal of 30,000.
