Cheney, Wash. – Redshirt senior track and field student-athlete Emma Murillo and redshirt senior track and field student-athlete Jordan Arakawa have been selected by the Eastern Washington University Athletics Department as its May Scholar-Athletes of the Month, as announced Tuesday, May 5.
A Kennewick, Wash., native, Murillo owns a 3.60 grade point average as a Spanish major. Arakawa hails from Olympia, Wash., and sports a 3.93 GPA as a biology/pre-med major.
Last month, Murillo set a new school record and a new Pelluer Invitational record in the discus with a toss of 169-0. Her personal best in the discus prior to that competition was 159-11. At the Cougar Invitational in Pullman, Wash., she won the hammer throw with a toss of 179-7, earning her third qualifying mark for the upcoming Big Sky Championships.
Arkawa was twice selected as the Big Sky’s Male Field Athlete of the Week in April following stellar showings in all three of the Eagles’ meets. He eclipsed the 200-foot mark in the hammer throw for the first time this season at the Pelluer Invite, winning the event with a throw of 203-3. At the Mt. SAC Relays, he won the hammer throw with a toss of 211-3 before recording a toss of 215-2 at the Cougar Invitational.
