Senior throwers recognized by the conference for the first time in their careers
Cody Humphrey and Olivia Midles of the Eastern Washington University track and field team were selected as the Big Sky Conference men's and women's field athletes of the week after their seasonal-best performances at the Sasquatch Carnival on May 6 in Spokane, Wash. This is the season's final track and field weekly honors, and the first time Humphrey and Midles have been recognized in their respective careers.
Humphrey uncorked a personal-best toss of 55-9 3/4 to win the shot put at the Sasquatch Carnival, moving him up to ninth in school history. He also placed first in the discus with a throw of 152-5. His mark sits third on the conference performance list and 57th in the West Region.
After redshirting the 2013-14 seasons due to a football related injury, Humphrey returned to the ring and has steadily improved all season. The senior from Hermiston, Ore., also ranks 10th in school history in the discus with a mark of 170-7, achieved earlier this season at the Pelluer Invitational.
Midles, a senior from Olympia, Wash., had a season best toss of 187-4 in the hammer throw to place first overall. Her mark sits sixth in the conference and 59th in the West Region.
Midles' personal best of 195-10 in the hammer throw, set at the 2014 Pelluer Invitational, is a Roos Field record that ranks ninth all-time in conference history and second all-time at EWU. She placed second in the hammer throw at the 2011 and 2013 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships.
This is the fourth week in a row that Eastern has claimed the men's field AOTW nod, as senior thrower Jordan Arakawa won it the previous three weeks.
The duo will compete at their final Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships this week on May 13-16, hosted by Eastern at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash.
