Eastern Wraps Up Day Two of NCAA West Preliminary Competition

Paula Gil-Echevarria races to a 14th place finish and a new personal best in the steeplechase

Five members of the Eastern Washington University track and field team competed at day two of the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, on Friday (May 29).

Paula Gil-Echevarria placed 14th overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal best of 10:21.99 to improve her third place ranking in the Eastern record books and placed just two spots out of qualifying for the national championships. The sophomore from Madrid, Spain, entered today's competition ranked 20th overall in the field of competitors.

Katie Mahoney and Catie Arrigoni also competed in the steeplechase and crossed the finish line in 10:48.99 and 11:00.18, respectively.

In the hammer throw, Jordan Arakawa had a mark of 198-6 to wrap up a successful career at Eastern.

Senior Emma Murillo fouled on all three attempts in the discus, but will shift her focus to Saturday's javelin competition where she is ranked seventh overall. Sophomore Samantha Baker will join Murillo in that event that is set to kick off at 3:00 p.m. Pacific time.

Big Sky triple jump champion Morena Mannucci will jump at 11:30 a.m., she is ranked 28th in the field with a mark of 41-1 3/4.
