Six Former Eagles Participate in Annual Pro Day Wednesday

Eastern players perform for scouts in hopes of securing professional football opportunities

A total of six former Eastern Washington University football players took part in testing for professional football scouts at EWU’s annual Pro Day on Wednesday (March 11) in Cheney, Wash.

Some of the players did not participate in all of the tests, which also included height, weight and other measurements. The former players are all hoping for possible professional football opportunities in the months ahead, and some will perform in other future tests and combines.

Eagle All-America safety Tevin McDonald, who was invited to the NFL Combine in February, did not take part. He is expected to take part in the pro day at Fresno State later this month.

In January, McDonald played in the East-West Shrine game. He is the son of six-time NFL All-Pro safety Tim McDonald, who is now an assistant coach with the Buffalo Bills. Tevin’s brother, Tim, Jr., (goes by T.J.), was a senior All-America safety at USC in 2012 and was drafted in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by St. Louis.

Eastern’s other heavily-touted pro prospect is offensive lineman Jake Rodgers. In January, Rodgers played in the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) Collegiate Bowl. He earned six different All-America honors for the Eagles last fall, including five first team selections.

The other Eagles from EWU’s 2014 team taking part in Pro Day were three-time All-America linebacker Ronnie Hamlin, wide receiver Cory Mitchell and running backs Quincy Forte and Mario Brown.

Of the marks posted Wednesday, Rodgers had an impressive vertical jump of 30 1/2 inches. Mitchell and Hamlin had good broad jumps of 10 feet and 9-11, respectively. Brown had the fastest 3-cone test with a time of 6.96, and his 40-yard dash times (4.51) and bench press reps (18) were also impressive.

The sixth player to take part was defensive lineman Andru Pulu, who concluded his EWU eligibility in 2013 and had two stints with the Seattle Seahawks last year. He signed a free agent contract right after the 2014 NFL Draft. He was released on June 24, then re-signed with Seattle on Aug. 4, 2014.
