Ogden, Utah – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team has been picked to finish sixth by the media and ninth by the league's coaches in the 2015-16 Big Sky Conference Preseason Polls, the conference office announced Wednesday, Sept. 30.
EWU received two first-place votes and 95 points from the media while garnering 54 points from the Big Sky's coaches.
"I've never put a whole lot of stock in preseason polls," said EWU head coach Wendy Schuller. "We've got two of the best players in the conference back in Hayley and Delaney Hodgins, and we have a number of other talented players. I think Tisha Phillips is ready to break out and become a great player in this league, and Ashli Payne is a really solid junior college transfer who will help us quite a bit."
Montana was the preseason favorite in both polls, while North Dakota and Sacramento State were picked second and third in both polls, respectively.
Montana got 10 of 12 first-place votes from the coaches and received six first-place votes from the media. North Dakota got three first-place votes from the media while Sacramento State received a pair of first-place votes.
Eastern returns four letter winners and two starters from last year's team that tied a school record with 21 victories and won its first-ever postseason game, topping Washington State in the first round of the WNIT. Senior Hayley Hodgins is back after earning First Team All-Big Sky honor a season ago while her younger sister, sophomore Delaney Hodgins, returns for her second year after being named the Big Sky Freshman of the Year last season.
The Eagles open their 2015-16 campaign with a home exhibition against Saint Martin's on Friday, Nov. 6.
