Austin, Texas – The Eastern Washington University women's basketball team fell victim to a slow start Friday afternoon, Nov. 27, that led to an 80-62 setback to East Carolina as part of the Lone Star Showcase.
The loss drops EWU to 3-3 on the year, while East Carolina improves to 6-1.
The Pirates raced out to a 26-9 lead after one quarter, taking advantage of a poor shooting performance from the Eagles to open up an early lead. ECU shot 11-of-21 from the field over the first 10 minutes while Eastern went 3-of-17 from the floor, good for 17.6 percent.
EWU was arguably the better team over the final three quarters, however, shooting 46.2 percent from the field while holding East Carolina to 38.3 percent shooting. The Eagles were outscored by just one point, 54-53, over the final 30 minutes, as each team's first quarter performance proved to be the difference.

Junior Tisha Phillips scored 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting, and led the team on the defensive end with a game high six rebounds and four steals. She also added on three assists.
Sophomore Delaney Hodgins scored 14 points on 6-of-14 shooting, while collecting four rebounds.
Freshman Violet Kapri Morrow made the most of her minutes, scoring seven while tallying two boards, two assists, and four steals.
As a team, the Eagles shot 37.5 percent compared to 42.6 percent for East Carolina. Eastern made two three pointers on 18.2 percent shooting while the Pirates hit five threes on 25 percent shooting.
EWU pulled down 31 rebounds compared to its opponents' 48, as they also accumulated 16 offensive boards over five for the Eagles.
The turnover battle was consistent for both teams as Eastern forced 26 Pirate miscues resulting in 19 points off turnovers, while East Carolina forced 23 turnovers and scored 13 times off the EWU mistakes.
Quoting Coach Schuller
"We just started too slow today. East Carolina is a team that plays hard and is really athletic, and it was a shock to us right off the bat. We didn't handle their pressure and aggressiveness early, and it ultimately cost us. When you dig a hole like we did, you spend the whole game trying to fight your way out and that takes a lot of energy."
Hayley Hodgins' 16 points gave her 1,304 on her career, moving her up to fifth all-time on EWU's NCAA Division I career scoring list. Dating back to last season, she has now scored in double figures in 22 straight games.
Eastern will conclude its run at the Lone Star Showcase tomorrow, Nov. 28, with a game against Creighton. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m. PST.
