Sedona, Ariz. - Last year's All-Big Sky Second team junior Marissa Borja finished tied for 15th overall in the Red Rocks Invitational, shooting an impressive two-day total of 151 (+7), as the Eastern Washington University women's golf team competed in the 20 team tournament on both Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
Borja had a stellar two-day performance over the course of the weekend, performing her best on the first day of the competition with a score of 73, good enough for seventh place after the initial round. Following Friday's showing, Borja shot a second round score of 78 on the 5579-yard, par-72 course.
As a team, the Eagles finished the tournament with a score of 631 (+55), placing 17th overall and fifth out of the six Big Sky teams who made an appearance at the Oakcreek Country Club.
Behind Borja and finishing tied for 67th overall, senior Taylor Crandall finalized her two-day total with a score of 158 (+14). With a second day score of 78, Crandall's best day came on the last day of competition.
"For our first event of the year I saw some good things happen after a little bit of a rough start during our first round," said head coach Brenda Howe, "Obviously we didn't have the finish we were hoping for and we lost a little ground. I've seen some really good scores from these ladies in the last 4 weeks, so we'll work on creating some different pressure situations and add some qualifying rounds at practice to get them used to competing day in and day out again."
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, Mar. 12, where they will compete in the two-round Lady Thunderbird Invitational held at the Sun brook Golf Club in St. George, Utah.
