Cheney, Wash. – 15 new players made their NCAA Division I debuts for the Eastern Washington University soccer in an exhibition match against Gonzaga on Friday, Aug. 14., falling 2-1 in a hard fought contest.
Eastern tied the score in the 24th minute with a goal slid past the keeper by sophomore midfielder Chloe Williams. Both teams where tied up until the end of the first half when Gonzaga scored what would end up being the game-winning goal in the 41st minute.
Williams brought her a-game the entire match for Eastern, scoring a goal in the first half and finishing the night with 3 shots.
Nine of Eastern's players had shots on goal, totaling 13 for the game. Six of the nine players to register shots on goal were new additions to the team.
Quoting Coach Bodnar:
"I was impressed. We are ahead of where we might have thought we were. We have a lot to work on obviously, but I was impressed with a lot of the young players' performances. We had some of the returning players who did well, too. I thought maybe we deserved a bit more out of the game result-wise. The team battled, even after the red card. I couldn't ask for more in terms of effort and energy. If the players will work hard like that, I think we will get a lot better as we continue to play."

Leading shots for this game were Williams (3 shots, 1 on goal), sophomore Savannah Hoekstra (2 shots, 1 on goal), and new member freshman Alexis Stephenson (2 shots). Goalkeeper sophomore Mallory Taylor had three saves during the game.
The Eagles will take a trip to Pullman this Sunday, Aug. 16, to play Washington State in its second exhibition match of the preseason. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
