Cheney, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University soccer team will host two Big Sky Conference matches this week, facing Northern Arizona on Friday, Oct. 16, and Southern Utah on Sunday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
Last week, the Eagles had a single match against Montana in Missoula, Mont., where the Eagles fell, 2-1, in double overtime. It was EWU's first overtime defeat in four matches so far this season. Eastern's lone goal was scored by freshman Jenny Chavez off of a corner kick. Sophomore Chloe Williams took the corner kick and found Chavez at the back post for a headed score. It was Chavez's third goal of the season.
Eastern remained near the top of the Big Sky standings despite the setback. The Eagles are currently tied for second place with Northern Colorado with a 4-1 league mark. With three matches left, the current conference leader is Idaho, holding a record of 5-0 in Big Sky Play.
EWU fell to Northern Arizona, 3-2, in the first round of the 2014 Big Sky Chapionship in the last meeting between the two programs. Eastern had previously topped the Lumberjacks, 1-0, behind a goal from Williams in the regular season. Eastern's last match against Southern Utah was a successful one, overcoming the Thunderbirds 2-1 off of early goals from Williams and Sophomore Laci Rennaker.
After this weekend's matches against NAU and SUU, Eastern will have three conference matches remaining until the Big Sky Conference Championship. The Championships will be hosted by the regular season champion from Nov. 5-8 with the top six teams receiving bids.
