Flagstaff, Ariz. – In the last road slate of the year, freshman Janaya Smith was the only member of the Eastern Washington University women's tennis team to earn two singles wins as the Eagles defeated Southern Utah, 6-1, and fell to Northern Arizona by same mark, on Monday, Mar. 23, and Wednesday, Mar. 25, respectively.
Smith, who has had a solid inaugural season in 2015, was able to earn two wins in the first position over her respective opponents on SUU, and NAU. In her first match against the Thunderbirds' number one player in Evgenia Marusko, Smith earned a dominant three-set comeback win by the score of 5-7, 6-2, 10-7. Against the Lumberjacks, and in another three-set comeback victory, Smith defeated Johanna Vang, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, for Eastern's only point on the day.
"We earned a great win against Southern Utah," said head coach Dustin Hinson, "I'm really proud of the team for fighting through some tough windy conditions in Cedar City. The team played smart, dynamic tennis and mixed things up to use the conditions in our favor. Against Northern Arizona, the team fought hard but couldn't capitalize on some key points, however, Janaya was able to earn a great win."
With two games left in Eastern's final road slate of the year, the Eagles will face UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev., on Thursday, Mar. 26, at 10:00 a.m., and then will travel to Portland, Ore., to face Portland State on Saturday, Apr. 4, at 12:00 p.m.
