Cheney, Wash. – The Eastern Washington University women's volleyball team began preparation for its upcoming season with a triathlon earlier this week while two of its newcomers picked up accolades following impressive summer showings.
The triathlon serves as a fitness test for the Eagles after they return from summer break. The players swam laps at the Cheney City Pool before biking around the city and back to the pool. A sprint test of different distances followed the swimming and biking portions of the fitness test.
Two incoming players collected impressive awards prior to their arrival in Cheney this week. Freshman Jessica Gilbert earned Most Valuable Player honors as part of the High Global Challenge, competing with the Northern California Volleyball Association High Performance U-22 team. The tournament was held in Pula, Croatia, at the end of July.
Not to be outdone, freshman Ka'iulani Ahuna received Tournament MVP honors at the USA High Performance Challenge as the team captain of the USA Junior A1 Red National Team.
EWU will host its annual alumni match next Sunday, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m. at Reese Court.
